Associazione italiana Ingegneria Forense
Welcome, this is the website of the Italian Association of Forensic Engineering

versione italiana   english version

A.I.F. was founded in Naples on November 16, 2009 and its objective is to bring together engineers practicing in the field of legal disputes in quality of Assessor, Party Expert Witness, and, in more general terms, working in the technical-legal consultancy sector.

Forensic Engineering can be defined as the discipline that applies engineering principles and methods to the solution of technical problems in a legal context, by combining Technological Knowledge and Law, or rather, Engineering and Jurisprudence.

This discipline, whose roots are in a widespread activity of the professional practice, constitutes a completely new discipline in the technical specializations scenario that was officially established, in Italy and in Continental Europe, on August 6, 2008, when the University of Naples Federico II instituted a dedicated second level Master course on Forensic Engineering (Postgraduate Course).

The services of a Forensic Engineer essentially constitute in providing technical advice to the Judge or to the Parties. In the first case, a professional can take on the role of Assessor supporting the Judge in a civil case (within preliminary investigation proceedings or court cases) or, in a criminal cases, can assume the role of Expert Witness assisting the Prosecution (Public prosecutor office) or can work as Assessor advising the Judge. On the other hand, in quality of Party's Expert Witness, the Forensic Engineer can not only support the parties (public and private subjects) involved in a court litigation, but also, outside this context, can take on the important role of technical and legal consultant with regards to activities in the building and industrial sector.

Ultimately, A.I.F. was established with the specific objective of promoting the birth and the development of the Forensic Engineer, or rather, of promoting its training and qualification defining specific competences and practice rules.
